Using Percentage-Based Margin in React-Native

I've encountered a problem in my React Native project where using a percentage value for the margin style attribute seems to shrink the height of one of my View components. However, if I switch to using an absolute value, the issue disappears and everything works as expected. Have you faced a similar issue when trying to use percentage values for margins in React Native? Here's a code snippet that reproduces this problem:

import React, { Component } from 'react';
import { Text, View, StyleSheet } from 'react-native';

export default class App extends Component {
  render() {
    return (
      <View style={styles.scene}>
        <View style={styles.card}>
          <View style={styles.container}>
            <Text>Hello World</Text>
          </View>
        </View>
      </View>
    );
  }
}

const styles = StyleSheet.create({
    scene: {
        backgroundColor: '#F9E8D5',
        flex: 1,
        justifyContent: 'flex-start',
        alignItems: 'center',
        flexDirection: 'column'
    },
    card: {
        backgroundColor: '#E6D5C3',
        flex: 0.2,
        flexDirection: 'column',
        marginTop: '20%' // Replace by 20
    },
    container: {
        backgroundColor: '#FFFFFF',
        flex: 1,
        flexDirection: 'column',
        justifyContent: 'center'
    }
});

Any insights or suggestions are greatly appreciated!

The size of a component on the screen is determined by its height and width.

One way to set a component's dimensions is by specifying fixed width and height in the styling. In React Native, all dimensions are unitless and represent density-independent pixels.

This method is commonly used for components that need to render at a consistent size regardless of screen dimensions.

To allow a component to dynamically expand or shrink based on available space, use flex in the component's style. The typical approach is to use flex: 1.

For styling references, you can check out the following resources:

  1. https://facebook.github.io/react-native/docs/height-and-width.html

  2. https://medium.com/the-react-native-log/tips-for-styling-your-react-native-apps-3f61608655eb

  3. https://facebook.github.io/react-native/docs/layout-props.html#paddingtop

    You can use Dimensions to calculate the height and width of the screen:

    var {height, width} = Dimensions.get('window');

    To specify a percentage by calculating the screen size and converting it into a percentage:

    Here is a sample example:

    const { height } = Dimensions.get('window');

    paddingTop: height * 0.1 // Represents 10% of the screen height
