Utilizing HTML5 to automatically refresh the page upon a change in geolocation

I have a web application built with AngularJS.

One of the functionalities is activated only when the user is in close proximity to specific locations.

To make this work, I can constantly refresh the page every 5 seconds and carry out calculations to determine if the user is near any location and enable the feature accordingly. However, I believe this puts unnecessary strain on the server, especially if the user remains stationary.

Is there a more efficient way for my web app to refresh only when the geolocation changes, or perhaps an even better method to achieve my goal?

Answer №1

Take a look at this resource: https://www.w3.org/geo/api/spec-source.html. To keep track of changes, it's recommended to store the previous position and then continuously check for updates.

var lastKnownPosition = {
    latitude: 36.152,
    longitude: -115.373
};
function monitorGeolocation(position) {
    if (position.coords.latitude != lastKnownPosition.latitude ||
        position.coords.longitude != lastKnownPosition.longitude)
    {
        // Update the UI
    }
}

// Request ongoing location updates.
var trackingId = navigator.geolocation.watchPosition(monitorGeolocation);

// Stop monitoring geolocation changes.
navigator.geolocation.clearWatch(trackingId);
