Utilizing nested classes in CSS or SCSS for calling a class within another class

I am having trouble calling a class within another class. Can someone help me figure out how to do it?

Here is the HTML code:

<div class="main">Content</div>
<div class="cover">Cover content</div>

And here is the CSS code:

.main {
    width:100%;
    height:360px;
}

.cover {
    width:90%;
    height:200px;
}

.main:focus {
    .cover {
        margin-left:12px;
    }
}

Answer №1

Make sure to pay close attention to the solution provided, as it will help you grasp this concept once and for all. The relationship between your HTML elements main and cover is such that you need to use the ""+"" selector to target them appropriately. Your initial code should suffice in the following manner:

.main:hover + .cover {
    color: red
}

Furthermore, you can employ nesting techniques in pure CSS. Take note of the example below:

.main:hover {
    & + .cover {
        color: red
    }
}

Feel free to click on the run code snippet below to view the generated output code

"Please keep in mind that I opted for 'hover' instead of 'focus' to aid in your comprehension and facilitate output visualization."

.main {
    width: 100%;
    height: 100px;
}

.cover {
    width: 90%;
    height: 100px;
}

.main:hover + .cover {
    color: red
}
<div class="main">Content</div>
<div class="cover">Cover content</div>

Answer №2

Attempting to achieve this task is not possible in the current state. However, if you wish for class cover to be implemented on the primary focus, you can opt for one of these alternatives:

If cover serves as a direct offspring of main:

.main:focus>.cover {}

If cover exists as a sibling of main:

.main:focus~.cover {}

Alternatively,

.main:focus+.cover {}

Answer №3

CSS does not allow for nesting styles, unlike Sass or Less which do support it. When working with pure CSS, you should structure your code like this:

<div class="container">
    <div class="box">Box content</div>
    Content
</div>
.container:focus .box{
    padding-left:20px;
}
