Video Background, Adjusting Scale to Fit Height and Cropping Width as Necessary

Forgive me if this question has already been posed, but my search through various related discussions has not yielded the exact solution I'm looking for.

My dilemma involves a 1280x720 video that I want to use as the background on my webpage. I need it to adjust to fit the height of the viewport at all times without altering its aspect ratio.

This means that if the viewport is wider than 16:9, there may be black bars or letterboxing on the sides of the video.

However, if the viewport is narrower than 16:9, the edges of the video will be cropped (which is acceptable since the important content is centered).

Can anyone provide guidance on how to achieve this? It's been quite frustrating trying to figure it out.

Answer №1

I encountered a similar problem before, but I managed to find a solution.

.videocontainer {
  width: 100%;
  height: 100%;
  position: absolute;
  padding: 0;
  margin: 0;
  left: 0px;
  top: 0px;
  overflow: hidden;
}

The code is quite simple and easy to understand.

Answer №2

It's difficult to provide a precise solution without a functional example, but here's a suggestion that might point you in the right direction.

Try creating a container for the video with absolute positioning and utilize flexbox to center the content (video) on the page while applying a black background. You can achieve this with CSS similar to:

.container {
    position: absolute;
    top: 0;
    left: 0;
    right: 0;
    bottom: 0;
    display: flex;
    justify-content: center;
    align-items: center;
    background: #000000;
}

You may need to adjust the styling of the video as well, like so:

video {
    width: auto;
    height: auto;
    max-width: 100vw;
    max-height: 100vh;
}

This approach should help you achieve the desired outcome, or at least get you closer to it. (Keep in mind that I haven't tested this solution)

If it doesn't work, I hope these suggestions spark some ideas. In the future, including your current code will assist us in understanding what you've already attempted.
