Ways to store AJAX response data for future use

I am struggling with implementing the getState function. My goal is to update a field on click using a state value retrieved from an AJAX call. I have come across mentions of promises in other responses, but I am unsure how to integrate them into my code.

    function processRequest(e) {
        if (xhr.readyState == 4 && xhr.status == 200) {
            var response = JSON.parse(xhr.responseText);
            var state = response.state;
        }
    }
    $('#myState').on('click', function() {
            var localState = getState();
            $('#location').val(localState);
    });

Answer №1

To make the variable accessible outside of the processRequest() function, you will need to adjust the scope.

var response = '';
var state = '';

function processRequest(e) {
        if (xhr.readyState == 4 && xhr.status == 200) {
            response = JSON.parse(xhr.responseText);
            state = response.state;
        }
    }
    $('#myState').on('click', function() {
            $('#location').val(state);
    });
