What is the best way to create a menu in JavaScript that includes a variable declaration?

Here is the menu I've created:

<a id="page1" href="" onclick="var = page1">Home</a>
 <a id="page2" href="" >About us</a>
 <a id="page3" href="" >Services</a>
 <a id="page4" href="" >Partners</a>
 <a id="page5" href="" >Contact us</a>

I am looking for assistance with creating an onclick event in JavaScript to declare a variable. As my knowledge of JavaScript is limited, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer №1

This code contains a syntax error:

var = page1

A variable must have a name assigned to it:

var someVariable = page1

Make sure that page1 is defined somewhere in your code, or consider if you meant to do this:

var page1 = 'some value'

However, it's unlikely that this is the intended action. Instead of declaring a variable within a click event, consider where the variable should be scoped and then update its value within the click event. It's best practice for a click event to call a function rather than contain lines of code directly. By encapsulating the functionality into functions, the code becomes more structured and maintainable.

If you provide more context on your goal, we can offer more tailored assistance.

To make use of jQuery, it's actually quite simple. You just need to call a function that creates the variable. Keep in mind that you can only work with this variable within that specific function. If you require access to the variable elsewhere, then create it at a global scope and utilize the function to modify it. For instance: HTML:

<a id="page1" onclick="makevar('hello word')">Home</a>
<a id="page2" href="" >About us</a>
<a id="page3" href="" >Services</a>
<a id="page4" href="" >Partners</a>
<a id="page5" href="" >Contact us</a>

Javascript:

var var1="";
function makevar(varcontent){
var1=varcontent;
alert(var1);
}

You can see both options in action by visiting this link and this one.
