What is the best way to make a select tag read-only before the Ajax request is successful

Is there a way to make a select tag read-only before an Ajax success?

I tried using this code, but it didn't work:

$("#tower").prop('readonly', true);

Then I tried this alternative, but I couldn't get the value from the select tag:

$("#tower").attr("disabled", true);

Any suggestions on how to set a select tag as read-only?

Answer №1

In my opinion, the most effective approach in this situation is to disable the select element and instead include a hidden input field to retrieve the value. It is important to ensure that the value of the hidden field matches that of the select element.

Answer №2

It is important to note that the select tag does not have a readonly attribute.

Based on my interpretation of your question, it seems like you want to show the options without allowing users to select them. If this is what you are looking for, you can achieve it by using the code below:

$(document).ready(function(e){
        $('select').children('option').attr('disabled', 'disabled');
}

Answer №3

Jquery can be utilized to deactivate the select drop down while still being able to extract its value.

$("#myselect").attr("disabled", true);
alert($("#myselect").val());
