Disabled text selection in Internet Explorer

I am in need of making one HTML element (Label) unselectable for IE. I have tried using the following methods:

  1. Unselectable=on
  2. onselectreturn=false;

Unfortunately, none of these solutions are working for me.

For Firefox and Chrome, I've successfully implemented the CSS properties below but encountered the common issue with IE:

CSS properties currently set:

-moz-user-select: -moz-none;
-khtml-user-select: none;
-webkit-user-select: none;
-o-user-select: none;
user-select: none;

Are there any alternative solutions or IE-hacks available?

I found a helpful answer on Stack Overflow, but it did not work for IE.

Answer №1

<label unselectable="on"> is essential for ensuring compatibility with Internet Explorer in HTML. To apply it through JavaScript, make sure to utilize the setAttribute method:

labelEl.setAttribute("unselectable","on")
. Using labelEl.unselectable = "on" does not have the desired effect (confirmed in IE9).

Please keep in mind that the "unselectable" attribute exclusively impacts text that is directly inside the element, rather than its children - if you want this behavior throughout, you will need to set the unselectable attribute on them as well.

Answer №2

When dealing with IE8, there are two methods to prevent an element from being selectable:

1.)

myElement.unselectable = "on"; // This method does not work on body elements

2.)

myElement.onselectstart = function (){ return false; }

Once an element is marked as unselectable, users will be unable to make selections within that specific element. However, they can still select either the text or the box of the element by dragging into it from a different element that is selectable.

I have attempted to solve this issue by cancelling various events on myElement (ondragenter, oncontrolselect, onmouseenter, onselectionchange...), but unfortunately, no success was achieved.

All of these strategies are specifically for addressing situations in IE8.
