Every time I switch tabs in Material UI, React rebuilds my component

I integrated a Material UI Tabs component into my application, following a similar approach to the one showcased in their Simple Tabs demo.

However, I have noticed that the components within each tab — specifically those defined in the render method:

render() {
    /...
    {
        value === 0 && < MyComponent1 / >
    } {
        value === 1 && < MyComponent2 / >
    } {
        value === 2 && < MyComponent3 / >
    }
    /...
}

seem to be recreated (verified with a console.log() statement in their constructor) every time I switch tabs, causing them to lose their state. Is this the expected behavior or am I missing something?

Answer №1

When working with components, it is important to understand their expected behavior. The constructor is called before the component gets mounted, so make sure to review the documentation if you are unsure about the process.

https://reactjs.org/docs/react-component.html#constructor

If you need a component to maintain its state while being hidden or shown, you can pass a flag (or className) that indicates whether the component should be hidden.

render() {
  /...
  < MyComponent1 hidden={value === 0} / >
  < MyComponent2 hidden={value === 1} / >
  < MyComponent3 hidden={value === 2} / >
  /...
}

The component can then use the prop to determine what will be shown while still preserving its state. For example, you could apply a CSS class to hide the component.

Answer №2

It is common for the state to reset when a component unmounts. To prevent losing the state of the component, you can store it in redux or update the state using the props from the parent component.

render() {
  return (
    {value === 0 && <MyComponent1 someProps={prop} />}
    {...}
  )
}

In the child component:

constructor(props){
  super(props);
  this.state = {
     param: props.someProps
  }
}

However, utilizing redux is often the preferred method.
