Is it possible for a popup to appear without any user interaction

Do you ever wonder how certain websites are able to trigger pop-ups without being blocked by Chrome's pop-up blocker?

I had always thought that pop-up blockers only allowed window.open if it was initiated by a user action. However, the situation seems different in this case. How do you think they are managing to bypass Chrome's pop-up blocker?

Answer №1

OUTDATED Unfortunately, the original resources and tricks no longer function as expected.

Upon further investigation, I discovered that a pop-up appears in Chrome when visiting the website for the first time (with an empty cache) and clicking anywhere on the page. However, after refreshing the page and clicking again, nothing happens unless the cache is cleared.

It seems like we're entering the realm of reverse engineering...

I took the script from and started obfuscating it.

After going through several steps, I ended up with the following code which appears to be unintended by browser manufacturers for such purposes.

While you may try to use this for your own benefit, I personally find it rather nefarious.

You can view the result on jsfiddle: This is the reverse of:

After thorough testing on my personal server, I have confirmed that this code successfully opens a new window in Chromium 28 on Ubuntu 12.04 when Adblock is enabled, directing to .

<script type="text/javascript">
document.addEventListener('click', function() {
    window.open('http://google.com','...','width=1080 height=640')
})
</script>

Answer №3

Give this JQuery solution a shot

        $('#yourCotrolId').on('click', function() {
    window.open('yourLink','...','width=1080 height=640')
});

Answer №4

window.open is typically blocked by modern browsers if not called within a click event handler.

Encountering this issue myself when working with Rails' format.js responses, I developed a handy plugin that simplifies displaying JS popups. This plugin allows for showing popups with ease using the following code snippet:

Popup("<div>Hello world</div>").show('up')

Answer №5

If you want to simulate a user action, consider using the .trigger method:

<button onclick="document.location='example.html'">Click Me</button>
$('button').trigger('click');

Answer №6

.trigger() is not suitable for replicating native browser events. Instead, you can utilize simulate() from the simulate.js library to imitate these events.

Make sure to add simulate.js to your project and then implement the following code:

$('a').simulate('click');
