Is there a way for me to dynamically decide whether to use the append or prepend function?

Utilizing jQuery to retrieve data from the controller and populate a calendar represented by a table with days in columns. Implementing functionality for navigating between previous week / next week, as well as previous day / next day. The four scenarios share similarities, prompting the desire to create a single function for DOM manipulation upon receiving data.

While I have achieved this goal, my primary hurdle lies in dynamically selecting between using the prepend() and append() methods.

If aiming for the previous day / week display, elements need to be prepended for placement on the left side. Conversely, if targeting the following week / day, appending elements is necessary to position them on the right.

In exploring solutions, two approaches surfaced:

  • Employ a basic conditional statement for each dataset
if(condition){
  // append
}else{
  // prepend
}
  • Develop a dedicated function for handling this task
function insertDOM(data, condition = false){
    if(condition){
      // append
    }else{
      // prepend
   }
}

An ideal scenario would involve dynamically determining which method to utilize. Consider the following illustration:

if(condition){
  methodToUse = append();
}else{
  methodToUse = prepend();
}
// for each data:
parentElement.methodToUse(element);

Answer №1

function addElementToPage(container, content, criteria = 'append') {
    (criteria == 'append') ? $(container).append(content) : $(container).prepend(content);
}
