Step-by-step guide to implementing a user-friendly search input field using the powerful AngularJS material design framework

I am searching for an effortless method to implement a feature similar to the expandable search text field in angular-mdl. By clicking on a search button, it will expand into a text field.

<!-- Expandable Textfield -->
<form action="#">
  <div class="mdl-textfield mdl-js-textfield mdl-textfield--expandable">
    <label class="mdl-button mdl-js-button mdl-button--icon" for="sample6">
      <i class="material-icons">search</i>
    </label>
    <div class="mdl-textfield__expandable-holder">
      <input class="mdl-textfield__input" type="text" id="sample6">
      <label class="mdl-textfield__label" for="sample-expandable">Expandable Input</label>
    </div>
  </div>
</form>

What I need is to incorporate a search button within the Card title aligned to the right side. When the user clicks on it, the button should expand and allow input. This implementation needs to be done using Angular-Material.

If you have any suggestions or assistance, please let me know!

I was in search of an example showcasing an expandable search feature using Angular and Material too, and stumbled upon this code on Codepen. However, I'm not entirely certain if it precisely matches what you're looking for. It creates a full-length input with a back button...

Here's the link to the code: http://codepen.io/kyleledbetter/pen/gbQOaV

The HTML code for the toolbar is as follows:

<md-toolbar ng-show="!showSearch">
  <div class="md-toolbar-tools">
    <md-button ng-click="toggleSidenav('left')" hide-gt-md aria-label="Menu">
      <ng-md-icon icon="menu"></ng-md-icon>
    </md-button>
    <h3>
        Dashboard
      </h3>
    <span flex></span>
    <md-button aria-label="Search" ng-click="showSearch = !showSearch">
      <ng-md-icon icon="search"></ng-md-icon>
    </md-button>
    <md-button aria-label="Open Settings" ng-click="showListBottomSheet($event)">
      <ng-md-icon icon="more_vert"></ng-md-icon>
    </md-button>
  </div>
</md-toolbar>
<md-toolbar class="md-hue-1" ng-show="showSearch">
  <div class="md-toolbar-tools">
    <md-button ng-click="showSearch = !showSearch" aria-label="Back">
      <ng-md-icon icon="arrow_back"></ng-md-icon>
    </md-button>
    <h3 flex="10">
        Back
      </h3>
    <md-input-container md-theme="input" flex>
      <label>&nbsp;</label>
      <input ng-model="search.who" placeholder="enter search">
    </md-input-container>
    <md-button aria-label="Search" ng-click="showSearch = !showSearch">
      <ng-md-icon icon="search"></ng-md-icon>
    </md-button>
    <md-button aria-label="Open Settings" ng-click="showListBottomSheet($event)">
      <ng-md-icon icon="more_vert"></ng-md-icon>
    </md-button>
  </div>

</md-toolbar>

It appears that there is currently no readily available angular material component specifically designed for this purpose. In order to achieve the desired functionality, I decided to utilize one of the textfield options provided by the 'material design lite' library. You can find a demonstration of an expandable search button using this approach in this animated GIF demo.
