Struggling to choose an element within $(this) despite being able to view it in the $(this) outerHTML

I have a question regarding jQuery 1.12. I am attempting to target an element within $(this).

 $(".select").bind('keydown', function(event) {
    elt = $(this)[0];
    console.log(elt.outerHTML);
    elt = $(this)[0].search("li")
    console.log(elt.length);
    switch(event.keyCode){
    // case up
    case 38:

        break;
    case 40:
        break;
    }
 });

Although the first list displays:

<div class="select" tabindex="1" style="width: 235px;"><select class="selectField selectMenu form-control select-hidden" name="user[address_attributes][state_id]" id="user_address_attributes_state_id" style="">
  <option value="">Select State</option>
  <option value="3526">Alabama</option>
  <option value="3556">Alaska</option>
  ...
  </ul></div>

displaying multiple "li" elements, when attempting to select the first "li" element using:

elt = $(this)[0].search("li")

an error occurs:

TypeError: $(...)[0].search is not a function

To solve this issue and select the initial "li" element within $(this), how can it be achieved? To further illustrate the problem, a Fiddle has been created - http://jsfiddle.net/cwzjL2uw/14/.

Answer №1

Your coding style is unique as it combines vanilla JS (utilizing the [0] index and outerHTML) with jQuery.

To achieve the same result using jQuery, you can locate the first li element within the context of $(this) by using:

$(this).find('li:first');

Answer №2

If you perform the following:

$(this)[0]

This actually transforms it from a jQuery object, resulting in the loss of access to the .search method. If your intention is to select the first element by its class name, you can utilize the following code snippet:

element = $(this).first();
