What is the best way to define Bootstrap 5's CSS variables with the :root selector?

I am working with a Bootstrap 5 application that utilizes various web components, all styled with Bootstrap 5. I am looking to dynamically customize the theme within the parent component that integrates these web components. The basic structure of my setup is as follows:

<div>
  <div>I'm wrapping multiple web components</div>
  <abc-comp />
  <xyz-comp />
</div>

My goal is to access and modify the shadow DOM of abc-comp and xyz-comp by updating Bootstrap's variables in the consumer component.

Since Bootstrap 5 supports CSS variables, I am attempting to override these variables by defining them in my own CSS :root styling, like so:

:root {
  --bs-primary: tomato;
}
<link href="https://cdn.jsdelivr.net/npm/<a href="/cdn-cgi/l/email-protection" class="__cf_email__" data-cfemail="89ebe6e6fdfafdfbe8f9c9bca7b9a7bb">[email protected]</a>/dist/css/bootstrap.min.css" rel="stylesheet"/>
<script src="https://cdn.jsdelivr.net/npm/<a href="/cdn-cgi/l/email-protection" class="__cf_email__" data-cfemail="15777a7a61666167746555203b253b27">[email protected]</a>/dist/js/bootstrap.bundle.min.js"></script>

<button class="btn btn-primary">
  Why is my color not tomato?
</button>

What is the best way for me to set Bootstrap's CSS variables in my own stylesheets when using multiple web components that rely on Bootstrap?

Answer №1

Your current version of Bootstrap does not appear to support customization using custom variables, particularly for button colors. Consider trying out the beta version 5.2 which may offer this feature: https://getbootstrap.com/docs/5.2/getting-started/introduction/

<link href="https://cdn.jsdelivr.net/npm/<a href="/cdn-cgi/l/email-protection" class="__cf_email__" data-cfemail="4f2d20203b3c3b3c3a29380e739f739d803f38393c7e">[email protected]</a>/dist/css/bootstrap.min.css" rel="stylesheet" crossorigin="anonymous" />

<style>
.btn-primary {
  --bs-btn-bg: tomato;
  --bs-btn-border-color: tomato;
}
</style>

<button class="btn btn-primary">
 I like tomato!
</button>

Answer №2

Maybe this will assist you... Consider making changes to the sass file located within the bootstrap directory in your node_module folder.

There are numerous variables available for customization, allowing you to incorporate your own unique styles.

You can even personalize the color scheme to match your preferences.

Answer №3

This is essentially a replica of Bootstrap: setting custom colors

The :root CSS variables are immutable and cannot be modified at "runtime". To achieve your desired outcome, you will need to redefine the CSS variable using SASS
